In this interview Romulo Barral explains why he decided to give the gold medals to his teammates at the 2016 IBJJF European Championships. Barral ran through the middle-heavyweight and absolute divisions, submitting all seven of his opponents en route to the finals.
“I don’t compete for gold medals anymore. I have lots of gold medals in my house, under my bed. It’s about coming here and make my students reach their best potential.”
When teammates meet in the finals it is usually the senior competitor who takes gold, but in this case the black belt gave away gold in both categories to his Gracie Barra teammates Gabriel Arges, who Romulo promoted to black belt, and Felipe Pena, electing to take silver instead.
