Dany Gerard, Tahitian Top Team originally trains in Tahiti, French Polynesia. Dany mentions that Jiu-Jitsu is relatively new in Tahiti but has seen much development in the past few years. “The beginning was hard”. Dany jokingly talks about the first three years as guys literally going on YouTube or Gracie videos to learn BJJ.
In terms of his team, they had the opportunity to learn from Brazilian Flavio Torres. The training from Flavio provided his team with three years of intense jiu-jitsu training. When asked who has influenced his Jiu-Jitsu, Dany states, “Andre Galvao, there are a lot of good guys under Atos like Keenan Cornelious, Hulk etc. but for sure Marcus Buchecha, I trained with him many times and he is a beast!”
Dany won first place in all his divisions (No-Gi, No-Gi Open, Gi and Absolute Open). Taking four medals at the SJJIF World Tournament, Dany mentions that he enjoys what he does. “The SJJIF is a good federation, they work for the sport and do everything to develop Jiu-Jitsu around the world. The good thing is you get to compete and represent your country. For me, I live in a small place in the pacific and most people don’t know where Tahiti is”.
