Mateo Tenzera: Becoming a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Many who achieve black belt in jiu-jitsu make commentary about how it is “only the beginning” or “I have so much to learn”. The journey does not end at black belt; it only becomes much more enjoyable. Mateo Tenzera was recently promoted to black belt in November 2016. As I asked him about his new status, he comments, “This is only the beginning, I feel like I have so much catching up to do.” Understanding the complexities of a black belt competitor, Mateo further comments, “With competition… since the level of a black belt can vary from really good to beyond great, I need to improve by exposing my weaknesses during training.”

What’s in Mateo’s 2017 competition calendar? He states, “Competing as a black belt will not be easy. I’ll be facing the biggest challenges in my jiu-jitsu career.” Mateo takes a deep breath just before the next round of  heart & grit and shares, “I never did Jiu-Jitsu with the end goal of being a black belt. From the first day I stepped on the mat because I loved jiu-jitsu… Don’t ever do it just for the belt.”mateo2
